Nuclear emergency zones in United States are adequate at 10 miles, federal commission says

Federal officials rejected a proposal to expand emergency planning for a nuclear disaster beyond the current 10-mile radius around a reactor. The nonprofit Nuclear Information and Resource Service, backed by several environmental groups, submitted a petition to the Nuclear Regulatory Commission in February 2012 calling for an expansion of so-called Emergency Planning Zones. Sen. Bob Casey, D-Pa., also called on the commission to study how a nuclear emergency would affect residents living more 10 miles from a reactor.
